  1. Ok...so the dog park is a big hit among the four-legged (and many two-legged) occupants of the city. How about a sledding park now? The little hill on the northeast corner of 14th and Box Butte just doesn't cut it...especially when half the town is there. Surely, someone has a couple of acres they could donate / sell cheaply to the city. Haul in some dirt, plant some grass, and call it good. I realize we're surrounded by sandhills....but that is all private property...not everyone knows the landholders.

  4. The following is a small excerpt from an anonymous comment. We suggest that the individual contact the appropriate school administrator(s) 762-3359 to discuss the published and unpublished comments. Another option is to call the school administration offices at 762-5475 to be included in the agenda for the next school board meeting.

Communication problems with the High School?

I recently took the opportunity to speak with a teacher about a particular grading system this teacher uses. And why I, as a parent, have never been contacted by any school personell about my students grades. I was given nearly every reason under the sun why communication was such a problem for this teacher. Too many students to teach was the first one. This teacher also uses a grading system that is an All-or-None policy for homework. Meaning, if you put something on paper, make it look like you have attempted to work all the problems assigned, whether you understand them or not, you will get 100% credit for that sheet. But, if you leave even one blank, you get 0% credit. No exceptions…

Well, don't you know, there are Parent-Teacher conferences (ever tried to talk to a teacher during that limited access?)

And then there's Power School.... I thought that when that was instituted, that it's purpose was to help you keep up on your kids grades, but that it did not remove the responsibilty from the teacher to actually COMMUNICATE with a parent when things are not moving in a positive direction. I guess I was wrong on that one also… And if you do not have daily computer access? Guess that's just too bad for you….

  5. Peace and love with in Alliance, is all you need. Love is all you need , like John Lennon wrote. We all should try it and band together for these are hard times and we will once again be one in Alliance. Lets all try to think positive and pitch in for what ever we can do to make a differance. we could be the town of peoples dreams but we need to love each other first.

  6. I would like to see just what people really think of the proposed new preforming arts building, and the fact that we have no real say in its implementation, thats the school board that will be spending 6.5 million dollars of YOUR tax money for the next 30 years. They say that this building will be available for public use too. Is the community aware that when the auditorium was built a nuumber of years ago that the community was told the exact same thing, and upon completion, they were then told that this was school property, and would require special arrangements at best for use by the community.
Is this truely the best time to be putting Alliance in debt? The school currently has no major debt. Our taxes were just raised last year, by a significant amount. And now that there's a little cushion for building maintenance, it seems that our school board, several of whom do not even reside within the city limits, cant wait to spend that money, even before its in the bank.
Think about this long and hard. Do we REALLY NEED THIS?

  7. I'm interested in knowing WHY there are so many run down properties in Alliance - isn't there an oridinance that prohibits excessive weeds and lawn growth? We have such a beautiful little town and it is disturbing to see properties in such disrepair as Central School. Any thoughts?

  9. What do the people of Alliance think about the City choosing not to spray for mosquito?

  10. I would be curious to hear new ideas/ways to improve Heritage Days. I feel that every year it goes downhill as far as vendors, sidewalk sales, the same dirty carnival, etc. Maybe it should be something that is brought up to the Chamber of Commerce?

  11. Isn't Alliance known for its pretty parks? Why is the City Council allowing them to dry up? Soon they will all be bindweed and stickers because if you don't water ,(yes-talking to the city water dept.!)the weeds will take over. That's what we want our kids playing on...puncture vines. We are paying taxes to keep our parks pretty. Save water some other way. Implement some watering restrictions like other towns do...odd number addresses water on Tues. Thurs. Sat. and even numbers on Mon. Wed. Fri. or some such system. Very easy to implement. By not watering the parks, a lot of other problems are going to arise. Look around...they are totally drying up!! It's disgusting and very sad.

  12. The School Board asking the City of Alliance to forgive the building fees for the new performing arts center should be a topic of discussion. I am all for the performing arts center, but disagree with asking others to forgive legitimate fees. What benefits are there for the city to forgive its fees?

  13. I have been contemplating two titles for a piece: Asleep Behind the Wheel or Polite Politics. It really is driven by recent experiences with three women close to me totally opposite yet common in the approach they take with current event's. My closest confidant is always saying "Well what are you really going to do about it anyway?" Second says "all you can really do is pray about it." Third person's approach to issue's is censorship "I find the news depressing so we only watch select documentary's and uplifting movies, we don't watch the news." I want to laugh and cry at the same time. It is their choice but from my perspective I function on getting through life being informed and having a plan, a goal, I have always used survival skills to get to where I am now. Not entitlement programs. The point of these titles are pushed by what my child was coming home telling me about conversations in class among teacher's and peers. A child in college who announced her political affiliation who can vote and has no idea what her party is doing or stands for. She didn't know that Snoopy, felon's, and deceased voted in the last election. And defiantly could care less. I am passionate about where our country is going because I have children. What is their lives going to be, will they find work? Why do I as a parent have to pay for my child's healthcare until they are 26. (Shake my head, eye roll, and laugh- is this responsible?) I have a parent who told me 7 years ago "well changes in Social Security aren't going to affect me." It is now because second year no cost of living increase and she is hurting, the decision whether to eat or put gas in her car. Question? If Jay Leno showed up in town doing the 'Jay Walk' would we as a community be able to answer mundane political questions correctly? What do you think?

  14. I was introduced to this site and was facinated with voices speaking to real feelings related to Alliance. Even though I have tried I feel isolated living here. I grew up in the area and left, but decided this was where I wanted to raise my child, build a life, and retire with my husband and just be content. I have those memories of opportunities of being elsewhere but I am here and now. Tell me what you love about our community. Share with me what makes this town tic. Help me to redefine my gut instict to move back. I have met amazing people here. They aren't only friendly they are intelligent, gifted, hard working people. I am going to begin today by telling myself and those I meet in my travel's that I live in the best kept secret in America. Will you help me see, feel and truely believe that? My time is valuable I don't want to waste anymore time looking for somewhere else. Sue

  16. I tuned into the City Council Meeting tonight and I have to say I am impressed with those member's contributing to Alliance. There seemed to be an atmospheric difference. I am impressed with Mr. Cox. He jumped right in with follow up issues and seemed very professional. I respected his acknowledgement of the police and fire dept., personally by name, Mr. Miller, and Erik Lentz for their hard work for our city. Rachel keep asking those questions! You too Mr. Benzel! Still early to predict, yet I feel better! I will tune in again!
