New Policy
Due to the overwhelming amount of potentially libelous comments on the blog, we have decided to require that people include their names with their comments. We understand that this will reduce the comments to near zero, but we feel this policy is in everyone's best interest.

Kudo's to the staff of the Times! I have been watching the blog for quite a while and have had a big problem with people posting blogs and not posting thier name. For me this is the same as hear-say and means nothing. I believe that if you are going to take the time to write, you should have the guts to add your name. In our current society people are not held accountable for thier actions. This is America, be proud of your country and take a stand for what you believe in. Right or Wrong you have a right to your opinion.
ReplyDeletePeople are probably not going to like having to sign their names, but if they do, it will sure make it easier to respond to a particular comment. When everyone is “Anonymous” it gets very confusing. I had thought it would help if your writers were required to have a screen name like they do in some other papers. If libelous comments are a problem, have the screen names registered with the Times under a person’s real name. That would make everyone more accountable but hopefully still willing to keep up the lively correspondence that has been going on lately.
ReplyDeleteSunday as I read the new policy I choked up my reeses buttercup and spit in my coffee. I can understand the reasoning behind it however Anonimty is a treasured narcistic way of being someone other than yourself. Unlike other's who feel pressure from a boss, collegues, neighbor's, spouse, family (I borrow from Erma Bombeck affectionaly am "imperfect and slovenly mum'or the'household drudge.") I write usually to some injustice or form of domination or oppressive ideology. Anonymous blogging preserves a sense of privacy and authenticity I am unable to demonstrate publicly. However I vow to blog along with due diligence with the utmost respect using as much restraing and self control not to perplex myself or other's. If we meet on the street just pretend like we always do with back's turned "You never really know someone until you have to share the privy."
